Finding Confidence in Group Photography
I’ve always admired women’s group photoshoots for their energy and beauty. Inspired by photographers like @michael_betznerphotography and @mandies__photography, I wanted to create something just as empowering and creative.
To bring the vision to life, I teamed up with my friend Courtney, @cb_modeling_charleston, who is the creative director for these group sessions. Courtney has extensive modeling experience and has been instrumental in helping guide poses, styling, and bringing the overall energy to each photo shoot.
What These Empowerment Sessions Are All About
We’ve been doing a series of women’s empowerment group photoshoots around Charleston, open to women of all ages and modeling experience. Each session is themed — starting with a mood and building from there. I often use Pinterest to gather visual inspiration for color palettes, outfits, and creative posing ideas.
Some of my favorite sessions so far have featured:
- Beachy flower goddesses
- Women in dresses spanning the full color spectrum
- Barefoot and glowing at golden hour by the ocean
These photoshoots are meant to be expressive, bold, and just a little bit magical. Everyone shows up ready to have fun, and that contagious energy is what makes each session so special.
Lessons I’ve Learned as a Group Photographer
Even though photographing large groups still pushes me outside of my comfort zone, these sessions have taught me so much — both technically and creatively. I’ve improved my camera settings for ensuring sharp focus across multiple subjects, and I’ve learned how to direct group posing without losing spontaneity.
While I do a lot of prep work for each session, the most creative moments often come from simply feeding off the vibe and energy of the group that day.
I shoot with a Fujifilm XT5, using the 23mm 1.4 and 56mm 1.2 lenses — tools that help me capture both wide storytelling shots and close, intimate portraits during our group sessions.
The Power of Women Supporting Women
There’s something truly powerful about watching a group of women come together — dressed up, hyping each other up, and simply having a good time. Whether it’s their first shoot or their tenth, every woman brings something unique to the space.
These group photography sessions are more than just pretty pictures. They’re about building confidence, making connections, and celebrating the magic that happens when women support women.
I feel incredibly lucky to be the one documenting it all.
