Creative Photoshoots in Charleston: Bringing Ideas to Life

Capturing light, feelings &  moments and all the things in between people and life.

Some of the my favorite photoshoots started with a connection, most popular is via Instagram. Living in a new state, far from home I meet most of my clients through social media. Which is tough now as I've been limiting my screen time recently. Most of my creative shoots started with an idea from another creator, a prospective client coming with my with their vision or a Pinterest search.

Starting With a Concept

When planning a creative session, I usually begin with a concept rather than a strict shot list. The best shoots often evolve naturally once we start exploring ideas together.

A concept can come from:

  • A season or mood
  • Movement and emotion
  • Fashion
  • Nature
  • A specific Charleston location
  • Music, film, or art inspiration
  • A story you want the photos to feel like

For example, I've had an idea about a beach session with kites. Since theUniverse loves to provide, I saw a IG post later in the year of a couple running on a beach with kites. I took that as a sign that I must do the session. I ordered kites on Amazon, but there was a shipping issue so last minute I have to make these from plastic table clothes and plastic sticks.

Collaborating With the Client

The best creative photoshoots feel collaborative. This means that both parties are having inputs and you try all the ideas.

I always want clients to feel involved in the creative process because the session should reflect their personality and energy — not just my vision as the photographer. Collaboration can look like:

  • Sharing inspiration photos
  • Choosing outfits together
  • Brainstorming locations
  • Building mood boards
  • Talking through comfort levels
  • Leaving room for spontaneity during the shoot

Either way, we build ideas together. Sometimes a client mentions loving flowers, vintage fashion, coastal vibes, or cinematic photos, and suddenly an entire concept starts coming together naturally.

Why Creative Sessions Matter

Traditionally a client session has a set focus with a desired shot list, but a creative session is open ended. It can be completely out of my comfort zone or something I've had my mind set on for awhile.  Creative shoots never feel exactly the same and the stress level is at 0. The balance of planning and creativity is what makes these shoots feel so personal, memorable and most importantly FUN!
